Sun’s out, fun’s out! It’s finally time for that long-earned rest and relaxation in the summer sun. Having to deal with tooth trouble is not on the vacation itinerary. To maintain your beautiful grin and keep the good times rolling, here are 4 ways you can prevent a dental emergency that might derail your summer fun.

1. Don’t Take Any Time off from Oral Hygiene

School’s out for the summer, but your pearly whites are there for you all year round. Just because your days aren’t bound to a strict routine on vacation doesn’t mean you can take a break from your dental hygiene routine. It’s still important to thoroughly and gently brush, floss, and use mouthwash twice a day.

If you’re traveling, make sure you pack all the products you need in a toiletry bag so you have them for your trip.

2. Schedule Your Checkups and Cleanings!

Now that your schedule is more open, it’s the perfect time to make those appointments! Planning a visit before your vacation gives your dentist the opportunity to detect any early signs of dental problems and prevent an emergency.

3. Pack Healthy Summer Snacks

The hustle and bustle of summer vacation means you’ll probably be constantly in and out of the house. If you’re wanting to snack between meals, try a healthier alternative to the usual icy and sugary summer favorites. Satisfying too many of your sweet cravings might lead to tooth decay.

Keep your fridge stocked with yogurt, fresh fruits and vegetables, and cheeses that you or your family can grab on the go. Drink sodas and juices in moderation and make water your go-to option.

If you can’t resist your sugary favorites, rinsing after eating or drinking can make a big difference.

4. Wear a Mouthguard for Sports Safety

Consider wearing a mouthguard to protect your signature smile. Whether or not you are playing contact sports, it’s better to avoid injuries such as broken or chipped teeth, cut lips, and fractured roots by playing it safe. Wearing a mouthguard can ensure you have minimal interruption from your summer plans.

If you have braces, a mouthguard can protect you from soft tissue cuts and keep your braces unharmed while you’re having fun.
