Oral Sedation, a Moderate Sedation Option at Jay Lopez, D.D.S.
Oral sedation is one of the available methods of sedation Dr. Lopez offers for patients who want to be sedated during dental procedures. He also offers IV sedation. You will be totally relaxed, and depending on the medication, you may have a sleepy, amnesic experience with little memory of the dental procedures themselves. But, you will be conscious enough to respond to instructions from Dr. Lopez and his team, and you will recover from sedation relatively quickly.
Candidates for Moderate Sedation
- Anyone who has fear and anxiety about dental treatment of any kind.
- Anyone who has a gag reflex.
- Anyone who has put off dental care for years because of dental anxieties.
- Anyone who wants to have all their dental care completed in one or two visits.
Choosing Between Oral or IV Moderate Sedation
Moderate Sedation is ideal for dental procedures because you are so relaxed that multiple procedures can be efficiently performed in one appointment without you undergoing heightened physical stress, a gag response, or anxiety. When you consider your sedation options, realize that the IV option allows Dr. Lopez to give you more medication if the treatment session is long and you require more sedation. The IV option also has an immediate effect so you are not waiting for oral medication to take effect. The safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of IV sedation makes this option a preferred choice when your treatment session is likely to be lengthy. Dr. Lopez will recommend what he thinks is best based on your level of expressed anxiety and your medical and dental circumstances.
What to Expect with Oral Moderate Sedation
Your safety is always paramount. Dr. Lopez is highly trained and licensed in the State of Arizona to prescribe an oral sedative, and to carefully control your dosage. He will choose the drug for you based on thorough knowledge of drug characteristics, your medical history, and the length of time your procedures will take. He will thoroughly review your medical history and assess which personalized sedation options are best for you.
You will be instructed to swallow a prescribed medication a certain length of time prior to your dental procedure. You will be asked to arrive for your appointment 60 minutes early and take your medication after arrival. You will never be left alone while you are sedated, and one of Dr. Lopez’s professional team members will be with you while you recover from sedation.
You will need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment, and you should not plan to drive, return to work, or operate machinery for the following 24 hours.
