Not only is Dr. Jay Lopez of Tucson, Arizona, an expert in Digital Smile Design, he is an expert in using porcelain veneer restorations. This type of restoration can be used to transform the smiles of many people. Keep in mind that there are many considerations in planning restorative and aesthetic treatment, and for some individuals, veneers may not be the best solution.
Dr. Lopez is passionate about achieving long lasting, predictable dentistry you will be happy with for years to come. Therefore, your treatment plan will be individualized to meet certain optimal criteria: best health, best function, and best aesthetics. If you have oral health issues such as gum inflammation, dental decay, cracked teeth, or missing teeth, Dr. Lopez will collaborate with you on a comprehensive treatment plan that will result in restoration of your oral health—not just your smile.
What Are Porcelain Veneers?
They are custom made shells of porcelain which can be bonded to the front of teeth. Dr. Lopez’s preferred dental ceramist will make your veneers according to Dr. Lopez’s exacting design. The porcelain will have the reflectivity of healthy tooth enamel and be perfectly shade matched to blend with your smile.
When Are Veneers an Appropriate Treatment?
Veneer treatment is a conservative aesthetic treatment. Little tooth enamel needs to be removed to fit and bond each veneer. Because porcelain veneers are custom shaped and sized they can be used for:
- Covering small chips or hairline cracks
- Lengthening worn anterior (front teeth)
- Covering white spots, intrinsic stains, or discoloration that is too serve for tooth whitening
- Closing small gaps between teeth
- Making slight adjustments in the inclination of the tooth, if this does not affect the overall balance of your bite
Veneers are not a replacement for orthodontics if your bite is imbalanced. If a tooth is significantly damaged, treatment with a crown will likely be needed.
Do Veneers Last?
Porcelain is durable and does not stain. Veneers add strength to teeth and can last many years. When veneer treatment is appropriately planned by an expert, the patient is an ideal candidate for this treatment, the veneers are designed to precise requirements by a professional dental ceramist, and the dentist is intent on achieving optimal results, the veneers will provide long lasting satisfaction. Good oral hygiene must be maintained. Patients will have their veneers examined at periodic and recall exams. If a veneer becomes chipped, it can be replaced with a new veneer, unless there has been damage to tooth structure. In these cases, such as in the case of an accidental blow to a front incisor, the tooth may need to be restored with a matching crown.

The Veneer Treatment Experience
To eliminate miscommunication, we will discuss your desires, take a digital scan, and take photos to have a diagnostic wax up made; you and Dr. Lopez will view this wax up and make any changes prior to any irreversible treatment being completed.
Before placing veneers, Dr. Lopez will need to remove a very thin layer of tooth enamel. This will allow the porcelain veneer to lay flat against your tooth. Thanks to his precision, your veneers will blend perfectly with your natural tooth and be undetectable. Although the preparation of each tooth is minimal, and you will be numbed, you might still be anxious about the procedure. Many patients experience dental anxiety, and we are prepared to make your experience calm and relaxed. Dr. Lopez offers sedation options.
After removing the thin layer of tooth enamel from the front of each tooth that will receive a veneer, we do a 3D digital scan of your full dental arch and individual teeth. These “digital impressions” are used by our preferred dental ceramist to design your custom veneers. Dr. Lopez will select the shade of porcelain that matches the natural color of your teeth.
While you are waiting for your porcelain veneers to be made, Dr. Lopez will provide temporary veneers to reduce tooth sensitivity and for aesthetics. Once your porcelain veneers are fabricated and they have been delivered to our office, you will have a second appointment. After checking the fit, Dr. Lopez will securely bond each veneer in place using a dental resin. After you receive your final porcelain restorations, you will enjoy immediate comfortable aesthetic benefits.
