Dental Cleanings for Preventive Care

Dr. Jay Lopez of Tucson, AZ is committed to your long-term oral health and beautiful smile. While Dr. Lopez offers a full range of restorative and aesthetic services, he and his team want to help you prevent as many dental problems as possible. Dental cleanings and regular exams are the center pins of disease prevention and oral health maintenance.

Why do you need regular professional teeth cleaning?

Without routine dental cleanings, you are at risk for the development of cavities (also known as dental caries) and of gum disease from bacterial inflammation. This is because your mouth contains thousands of bacteria. As bacteria build up on your teeth, a sticky film called plaque develops. If plaque is not removed, it hardens into tartar. Both plaque and tartar keep harmful bacteria in contact with your teeth. These microbes feed on the sugars and starches in your food, producing acids that erode dental enamel. As erosion (also known as dental decay) progresses, cavities can develop. When bacteria on your teeth irritate your gum tissue, the tissue pulls away from the tooth surface, forming gum pockets. Chronic inflammation or advanced infection in gum tissue is not only uncomfortable and unsightly. It can lead to significant gum recession, destruction of periodontal bone tissue, and tooth loss.

Professional dental cleanings are one of the most important ways to protect your oral wellness. At each cleaning appointment, our registered dental hygienist will use special instruments to remove the microbes, plaque, and tartar that accumulate on your teeth. She will also polish your teeth to give them a beautiful, healthy smoothness. The health of your gum tissue and teeth will also be checked for any signs of change since your last appointment.

How often is right for you?

Despite your best efforts at homecare, some plaque will develop between your cleaning visits, so you want to stay on schedule with these visits. Many patients are able to maintain oral health with dental cleanings scheduled at six-month intervals. Others need more frequent cleanings to maintain oral health. Dr. Lopez will recommend more frequent cleanings if you have heightened risk factors for cavities, have been diagnosed with gum disease, have a personal or family history with oral cancer, you are a smoker, or you have an autoimmune disease that increases your susceptibility to gum disease.

Many patients want to schedule cleanings every three to four months out of personal preference. If you especially enjoy the brightness and smoothness of freshly cleaned teeth, as well as the knowledge that you are helping maintain optimal health, we are happy to provide this service.

It’s not JUST a dental cleaning appointment.

At Jay Lopez, D.D.S., we place emphasis on the value of periodic teeth cleaning appointments. This is a regular and opportune time to have the health of your teeth and gums examined and your questions answered. All the soft tissue of your mouth will be examined for any signs of cancer. Because Dr. Lopez will look for oral health changes since your last appointment, you will be able to discuss appropriate treatment for discovered problems. It’s an ideal time to discuss teeth whitening and other aesthetic treatments. Because we genuinely care about our patients, we will be generous with our time and personal attention.

If you are anxious about dental services of any kind, including periodontal exams and teeth cleaning, remember that Dr. Jay Lopez offers sedation options. You can have the quality care you desire, while fully relaxed and without pain or fear.
