Sinus Lifts

To help patients become eligible for dental implants, Dr. Jay Lopez of Tucson, AZ, performs sinus lift surgery. Sedation is an option, including IV sedation. Dr. Lopez has had years of advanced training and predictably performs this type of surgery often for patients receiving implant treatment. During this procedure, Dr. Lopez raises the upper sinus and inserts osseous (bone) material that will integrate with the existing bone tissue to add sufficient bone volume to receive one or more implants. One of the benefits of having sinus lift surgery by Dr. Lopez is his use of Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) for faster healing.

Not all people who have implant treatment in the upper arch need a sinus lift and those who do are often not aware there are several techniques available for accomplishing this procedure. After a comprehensive oral examination and 3D Cone Beam Computed Tomography, Dr. Lopez will be able to tell you if additional healthy bone tissue needs to be developed prior to your implant placement and what steps are available to accomplish this.

The reasons why you may not have sufficient bone volume vary. Bone tissue can decrease after wearing a traditional restoration for missing teeth (bridge or denture) for an extended period or losing one or more teeth in your upper jaw and waiting months or years to fill the gap with an implant. Periodontitis also can lead to bone loss. Some people naturally have insufficient bone tissue in the upper jaw. Keep in mind, that the shape and size of the sinus cavity varies from person to person. Dr. Jay Lopez customizes treatment to fit what is best for each specific patient.

Prior to performing a sinus lift, Dr. Lopez will determine if you are healthy enough for oral surgery and IV sedation. If you have active gum disease or tooth decay, he will recommend appropriate treatment to ensure the most predictable, healthy outcome.

If you are considering dental implant treatment, you owe it to yourself to schedule a consultation with Dr. Jay Lopez, Tucson’s implant expert.

If you have been told you need a sinus lift, Dr. Lopez will be happy to perform an examination and 3D cone beam computed tomography to provide an expert second opinion.

Note: If you need to have a tooth extracted, Dr. Lopez will explain the benefits of “ridge preservation” with an immediate bone graft. This treatment involves placing osseous material in the root sockets vacated by the removed tooth roots, treating the site with Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF), and suturing the gum tissue. This procedure prepares the site for a dental implant at the same time the tooth is extracted and reduces the possibility of needing a sinus lift in the future.
