Bone Grafts

Bone grafts are used to restore bone following tooth loss, tooth extraction, periodontal (gum) disease, or trauma. Bone grafting may be necessary as part of your implant treatment if your jaw bone lacks adequate bone tissue where the implant needs to be placed. Bone grafting is a simple procedure that can be done by Dr. Jay Lopez using local anesthetic or while you are under IV sedation.

Dr. Lopez, offers comprehensive dental implant services, including bone grafting in the comfort of his own office. Rarely does a patient need to be referred. With years of experience, advanced training, and active membership in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) and the Academy of Osseointegration (AO), you can be assured Dr. Lopez is prepared to give you optimal treatment, whether you need a single implant or whole mouth restoration with implant treatment.

If Dr. Lopez will be removing one or more teeth because they are no longer viable, he may recommend a bone graft at the time of extraction, to fill in and build up bone tissue efficiently for ridge preservation. This will speed up bone healing and reduce the need for additional complex bone grafting prior to your implant placement.

Will You Need a Bone Graft?

Dr. Lopez will know if you need a bone graft prior to implant surgery after performing your oral examination, assessing the possible implant treatments that will be most appropriate for your circumstances, and obtaining a 3D Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scan. He will recommend what is in your best interest. Some people naturally have narrower, less dense bones that will require grafting prior to an implant. Others have lost bone tissue over time after a loss of a tooth. This process takes place because when a lost or extracted tooth no longer stimulates the bone tissue by chewing, the bone begins to deteriorate.

What to Expect

As part of optimal, predictable treatment, Dr. Lopez will do a thorough diagnostic workup of your mouth, including x-rays, and 3D cone beam computed tomography if he is planning implant treatment. He will make sure you are in good general health and thus able to safely undergo surgery. If you suffer from gum disease or other oral health concerns, Dr. Lopez will recommend the treatment you need to eliminate these conditions before performing a bone graft.

You will be fully informed about the type of osseous (bone) material Dr. Lopez will use and what you will experience. Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) is routinely utilized to help with the vascularization of the bone graft, decrease healing time, and minimize post-surgery inflammation and discomfort. Dr. Lopez uses optimal anesthetic and sedation techniques to ensure your maximum comfort. IV sedation is available.
