Is that a bad sign? Keep reading \u2013 wisdom tooth development might be more nuanced than you thought!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You Might Not Have Wisdom Teeth \u2013 And That\u2019s Okay!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve yet to see late-blooming pearly whites or developed an ache in your jaw, it\u2019s possible you simply don\u2019t have wisdom teeth. Professionals aren\u2019t quite sure what causes \u2013 or doesn\u2019t cause \u2013 wisdom tooth growth in the first place, but it seems that not having them doesn\u2019t negatively affect your oral health. So there\u2019s a chance you\u2019re safe from embarrassing anesthetic antics!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Or They\u2019re Hiding Underneath Your Gumline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, no pain and no visual sightings don\u2019t necessarily equal no wisdom teeth. Sometimes teeth can get trapped underneath the gumline, either because they simply can\u2019t sprout properly, or an existing tooth is blocking their exit. <em>Most <\/em>of the time this hurts, but not all of the time. Since trapped (or \u201cimpacted\u201d) teeth can invite infection or create cysts, you might want to check your calendar and schedule a dental appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Should I See My Dentist About My Wisdom Teeth?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as possible. Your dentist can take accurate X-rays of your mouth and jaw to determine whether or not your wisdom teeth are M.I.A. or need an S.O.S. If it turns out that you don\u2019t have any third molars to speak of, congratulations! If they\u2019re impacted, however, it\u2019s best to take care of the problem sooner than later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not everyone realizes that wisdom teeth don\u2019t always need to be extracted. Depending on how well they\u2019re developing and how well your other pearly whites are responding, it could be just fine and dandy to let them emerge on their own. You can rest assured, though, that when extractions are necessary, your dentist works diligently to ensure your comfort during treatment.
