Patients hear “surgery,” and their minds go straight to worst-case scenarios that rarely reflect reality. Having placed implants for years now, I want to walk through what the process looks like. Trust me, everything your imagination can dream up is almost always scarier than what actually happens!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before We Start<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every case begins with a conversation, an exam, and detailed imaging. It\u2019s important that I make sure you\u2019re a good candidate, can commit to the treatment process, and that I have precise pictures of your bone structure, nerve locations, and sinus positioning. This first step is the secret ingredient of implant placement. It’s what allows me to plan the procedure with real precision to achieve the best outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Day of Surgery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most implant placements take one to two hours, depending on complexity. You’ll be numb, and depending on your anxiety level and case, we may also use nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV sedation. Many of my patients choose IV sedation for implant surgery specifically because it often makes it so that you won’t remember much of the procedure itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What It Actually Feels Like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Believe it or not, most patients describe implant surgery as less uncomfortable than a tooth extraction. You might feel some vibrations and a little pressure, but you shouldn’t feel any pain once the anesthetic kicks in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The jawbone itself also doesn’t have many nerves running through it, so discomfort is typically minimal once the initial gum incision is made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immediately After<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It’ll take a few hours for the numbness to fade, and depending on your choice of sedation, it could take the better part of the day before you return to normal. Over the next few hours and days, there will be some swelling and mild discomfort as your mouth recovers, but it’s nothing a little OTC pain reliever or an ice pack won’t fix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also send every patient home with clear aftercare instructions and my direct line for questions. If something feels wrong, I want to know so I can get you back in the office and provide prompt treatment if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Healing Period<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the part patients underestimate. The implant needs three to six months to properly fuse with your jawbone before we can attach the final crown, bridge, or denture restoration. A lot of patients worry about the timeline, but it’s important to let the osteointegration process play out for lasting results. Otherwise, you could experience serious complications or implant failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve done this procedure thousands of times, and the thing that always makes me smile is watching patients realize that it’s nowhere near as bad as they made it out to be in their heads.
